| Round 2:
(14-20/7/97) Big Rocks versus Chunk Of Library |
||
| What: (The unofficial title) |
Big Rocks |
A Chunk of Library |
| Where: | Swanston Street, outside the Town Hall | Corner Swanston Street and La Trobe Streets, outside the Museum and State Library |
| Details: | If there's
anybody who doesn't believe that real estate prices
inflate beyond all recognition, show them this. The rocks
have engraved in them a few of the things that the local
Aborigines got in exchange for the land that Melbourne
now sits on. Blankets, beads, knives, that sort of thing. In retrospect, probably a little cheap, but better than the proverbial kick in the teeth - which is just a taste of what many other Aborigines from the settlers. |
This may
look like a chunk of a library that someone's created as
a sculpture. It's not. There's an actual library down
there. It's not very well known, and getting membership
is very tricky, involving a certain amount of potholing.
The Cave Clan can probably point you in the right
direction. In fact, if you watch very carefully as you pass under Swanston Street on a Loop train, you can see part of the geography section from the window. |
| The Result: | No real contest here - I bet librarians wish people thought all libraries were this cool. | |
