Working holiday visas

24 February 2003 by danielbowen

So i noticed in another question that you mentioned something called a Working Holliday Visa, and, well, among the countries that have this “reciprocal relationship” with you wonderful bastards, you did not mention the US… please tell me this was oversight on your part, as i have been hoping to take an extended ‘holliday’ in Brisbane and would need to work. - Conklin, USA

An oversight? AN OVERSIGHT?!? I’m outraged - what kind of mickey mouse web site do you think we’re running here? You think I don’t do MONTHS of research before writing these answers? Do you think I just make up stuff off the top of my head? Well okay, it is a mickey mouse web site, and I don’t do months of research. I do a few minutes of research, which generally means hitting Google and/or web sites I know will have the answers.

Or do you think that I’m personally responsible for Australian government policy, and when I made up the list of which countries to reciprocate, I purposefully left yours out?

Nope, the Australian government, without asking my opinion, have gone ahead and set up reciprocal working holiday visa arrangements with the following countries: The United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, the Republic of Ireland, the Republic of Korea, Malta, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, Finland and the Republic of Cyprus.

So, what to do if you want to come to Australia and work? Depends what kind of work you want to do, but you could arrange some kind of employer sponsorship deal. All the details you could possibly want are on the (deep breath) Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs web site.
