Kath and Kim

7 July 2003 by danielbowen

A Aussie friend who recently was a houseguest sent us some little gifts as a thank-you. One of them is a hostess apron with a picture of two middle-aged women, one of whom is giving us the finger salute. The logo on the botom says “Kath & Kim”. We assume it refers to some Australian movie or TV show. What is Kath & Kim? - Dirk, probably USA

Ah yes, Kath & Kim, much more than merely mother and daughter, they are modern heroes of suburbia. Some say ABC TV’s “Kath & Kim” is a comedy, but I prefer to look at it as a documentary series, following the exploits of this mother and daughter living somewhere out in zone 3 near Fountain Gate. Their wisdom, their grasp of culture, and above all their impeccable elocution leaves the viewer in no doubt that these are a couple of very special ladies.

But can people overseas experience Kath & Kim for themselves? The answer is… maybe. If you fly Qantas a lot, or you live in Canada or the UK or certain parts of Africa and have one of the obscure cable channels that’s showing it, you may be in luck. Apparently it’s also shown in Singapore and New Zealand, and it’s available on VHS or DVD, but non-PAL countries are probably out of luck, unless you are effluent enough to have multi-standard video equipment.
